Hurricane Preparedness and Response
The District of Columbia is susceptible to a wide variety of severe weather. Although severe thunderstorms occur more frequently, the District has also experienced a number of damaging hurricanes, including Hurricane Juan in November 1985, which did $9 million worth of damage along the C&O Canal and $113 million along the Potomac. The last major hurricane to hit the District of Columbia was Hurricane Fran, a category 3 storm, on September 5 - 8, 1996. Fran downed power lines and trees and caused severe flooding in the southwest quadrant of the city.
